Worth Reading: Things We Know about Network Queues
Every time someone tries to persuade you to buy (expensive) big-buffer data center switches, take an antidote: the Things we (finally) know about network queues article by Avery Pennarun.

Thanks for the link, this is a nice short read! :-)
Item 11, Ethernet "pause" frames usually make things worse, coincides with my experience. I have often encountered performance problems that could be remedied by disabling "pause" frames, but I have never experienced a situation where they helped.
Ultimately I trust benchmarks more than aphorisms and the benchmarks show that DDCs are faster. The performance is probably mostly due to VOQ and cell spraying though; the larger buffers are more of a bonus.
